On February 8 Parhelion Trio presents a vigorous program for an anti-Valentine’s Day concert for the ages: Colored in Velvet. Featuring daring contemporary classical music of the past decade that explores different aspects of death and sensuality, Colored in Velvet showcases an array of compositions tainted with darker leanings. From Maldorer, by Daniel Felsenfeld, is a chilling vocal and musical narration based on excerpts from a grotesque gothic novel by the French-Uruguayan 19th century poet Lautréamont. On a similar contemplation of the topic of death, Death Stench, by Matthew Hindson, virtuosically displays a genre-bending style of avant-garde meets death-metal.
Additional highlights from Colored in Velvet include a selection of fiery works infused with elements of popular music. Parhelion trio will perform two classic tangos by Astor Piazzolla—with special guest Argentine tango dancers Jack Hanley and Nan Min—and Techno-Parade by Guillaume Connesson, a joyfully obsessive play on the vitality of techno music.
