7:00 PM: Alone with Alone
Composer/pianist Steven Long is joined by violinist Noemi Gasparini in the premiere performance of a recently composed work, Alone with the Alone. This piece employed a new method of composition for the composer, a process which began with recording improvised material, refining it, and then re-recording the distillation until the completed piece was committed to paper as if taking dictation. The duo will also perform a group of structured improvisations based on folk songs. The traditional melodies, for the most part, exist in silence. They are heard only by the inner ears of the players.
Steven Long is a composer, pianist, improviser, and native of Brooklyn, New York. His work explores the porous line between composition and improvisation. He is fascinated by the conflict between the musical ear and the score; the spontaneous understanding or reaction to a musical situation as opposed to the visual representation of ideas. This fascination leads him to many questions about the fundamental materials of music. Some of these questions concern the layers of social interaction which go into music-making. There is the relationship with the audience, and behind the scenes with his fellow musicians, and most importantly the unique personal interactions between the musicians and their instruments/voices. He attempts to understand the unique structures of these interactions; he seeks to utilize their color, weight and gravity as actual material in his work. It is only when working closely with others that he feels he is truly getting to the core of my own creative identity.
