Ras Moshe Burnett:
Born 3-22-68 in Brooklyn NY(formally known as Theodore Burnett III).
Studied music in public school(8 years).

Was a member of the Heritage Symphony Orchestra,and orchestra for youth in Brooklyn playing the works of black classical composers.
Ras eventually started playing with Reggae formations and African groups in the Brooklyn area. Since 1987,he has been exploring the outer fringes of Jazz development. He also studied music with his father who (Ted II),who played Alto Sax,Flute & Bass Clarinet. He passed on 3-14-14 in Brooklyn.
His paternal grandfather-Theodore Burnett I (“Barnett” for professional reasons) played tenor and alto saxophones in the bands of Earl Bostic,Lucky Millender,Jimmy Mundy,Don Redman and many others after arriving in Brooklyn from Jamaica. He also led small group combos with Shadow Wilson for many years,as well as writing lots of religious music,he was house musician and writer for New Canaan Baptist Church in Brooklyn.
His Maternal Grandfather-James Edward Rand,played saxophone briefly in Jazz and calypso bands in Harlem,NY.

Ras Moshe Burnett has also been writing and reciting poetry since childhood.
He has performed his compositions at Roulette,The Firehouse Space,The Knitting Factory,Sanctuary For Independent Media,The Brecht Forum,Zebulon,The local 269,Galapagos,The Brooklyn Lyceum,Hallwalls Gallery(Buffalo),Deep Listening Space,The 119 Gallery,WBAI,WKCR,St Marks Church,The Vision Festival,The Fridge(Washington DC).
He is currently a member of Bill Cole’s Untempered Ensemble.
He is the founder of The Music Now Festival,going on for 16 years now. Mostly at The Brecht Forum,The Brooklyn Commons and occasionally other locations.
He is also a member of the Arts For Art organization and performs regularly under that banner at the Clemete Soto Velez Center.
He believes in the positive effect that Jazz,especially “free Jazz” and new music can have in the context of social and personal change.
