Kenji Herbert Quartet & Lukas Ligeti Group

New York’s contemporary music scene is singularly vast in scope, perhaps impossible to cover with a single series. With this residency at The Firehouse Space, Dan Blake brings together a range of collaborations that at least begins to represent the diversity of experiences and musical styles he has witnessed while living in New York.

For this third concert of the series, Lukas Ligeti brings his new ensemble. Born in Vienna into a family from which several important artists have come, including his father Gyorgy Ligeti, Lukas has developed a musical style of his own that draws upon downtown New York experimentalism, contemporary classical music, jazz, electronica, as well as music from Africa. For this concert, Ligeti debuts brand-new music composed for a group of exceptional New York-based improvisers, including Shoki Nagai (Piano), Travis Sullivan (Saxophone) and Tom Bergeron (Trumpet).

Kenji Herbert will be presenting a new set of compositions with a diverse set of influences drawing from jazz, 20th century classical music and Eastern philosophy, with an emphasis on space for extended improvised excursions while maintaining a strong melodic core. Joining him will be his long-time collaborator, Milwaukee-based drummer Devin Drobka, and the NYC-based saxophonist Dan Blake and bassist Chris Tordini. Listen to a recording of the Kenji Herbert Quartet here.
