Collide-O-Scope Music + String Noise will present its season opening concert with an exciting slate of recent works by North American composers and world premieres by David Lang, Gordon Monahan, Lou Bunk, and John Zorn. The program will include two works that utilize interactive electronics: Gordon Monahan’s Harmonic Shift, in a new version for two violins, as well as Edmund Campion’s Natural Selection, a real-time performance environment for MIDI-enabled acoustic piano whereimprovisational figuration based on a pitch matrix continuously generates a computer-generated parallel soundscape in response. Other highlights include the world premiere of Twenty Cross Sections Of Three Themes, by Collide-O-Scope Music co-director Lou Bunk, as well as a performance of Yotam Haber’s trio Stendhal Syndrome, a musical evocation of the psychosomatic illness where one succumbs to a work of art and falls ill, faints, even hallucinates. String Noise will perform world premieres by David Lang Warmth and John Zorn’s APOPHTHEGMS. The evening will also include Conrad Harris performing selections from John Cage’s intrepid Freeman Etudes — based on mapping star charts to pitch configurations, as well as I Ching operations to determine intricate performance details. Now in it’s fourth season, Collide-O-Scope Music has established itself with an innovative approach to the concert settings where fixed compositions and open-form improvisatory or interface based episodes are woven together into seamless, continuous sets. The group has collaborated with a number of the exciting emerging composers of our time as well as performing iconic works by Xenakis, Babbitt, Cage, and Stockhausen, among others. String Noise, comprised of “two of the most focused and lustrous-toned avant stalwarts in New York City”, made its debut at the Ostrava Days Festival (2011) in the Czech Republic. They have been presented internationally as well as in New York at the Issue Project Room and Roulette, and have recordings soon to be released of new works by New York composers.
