What Where is Brazilian percussionist Piero Guimaraes and French-American pianist Julia Den Boer.

The duo seeks to enrich the piano and percussion repertoire through the commission of new works, and to expand their sound world through the immense possibilities of their instrumentation.

Percussionist Piero Guimaraes stands at the forefront of a new generation of international performers specializing in orchestral and contemporary music. A native of Brazil, Guimaraes presented the Brazilian premiere of several pivotal works by influential composers including Iannis Xenakis, Steve Reich and Peter Eotvos. Around the New York contemporary music community, Guimaraes has performed at venues such as Merkin Hall, Symphony Space, and Roulette. In addition to his solo career, Guimaraes serves as a core member of the Iktus Percussion ensemble. Guimaraes and Iktus delivered both world premieres and presented master classes in the elite music departments of Queens College, Oberlin Conservatory, Michigan State University. the University of Michigan, and the University of Wisconsin at Madison. As a member of the duo What Where with French pianist Julia Den Boer, he was jointly awarded a prize winner in the coveted Ackerman Chamber Music Competition.

French-American pianist Julia Den Boer is based in New York where she enjoys a versatile carreer as a soloist, chamber musician and pedagogue. A strong advocate for new music, Julia performs regularly in North America and Europe. She is a recipient of the Solti Foundation award and was awarded the Prix Mention Speciale Maurice Ohana at the 2012 International Orleans Competition, her duo with percussionist Piero Guimaraes, What Where, won a prize at the 2013 Ackerman Chamber Music Competition. Recent performances include the MATA Festival with Talea Ensemble, a solo recital at the Bohemian National Hall, Ear Heart Music at Roulette with Iktus Percussion, the International Computer Music Conference, the Klangspuren Festival in Austria, Matrix 11 at the SWR Studio in Freiburg, Live@CIRMMT Series in Montreal, Poets Out Loud at Lincoln Center, the Five College New Music Festival and Manifeste at IRCAM. She has had the opportunity to work with composers such as Martin Matalon, Heinz Holliger, Philippe Hurel, Philippe Manoury, Unsuk Chin and Ludger Brümmer and with conductors such as Alan Pierson, Denis Bouliane, Lorraine Vallaincourt and Frank Ollu. Her performances have been broadcasted on Q2, CBC Radio 2, the SWR and France Musique.
