New York’s contemporary music scene is incomparably vast in scope, perhaps impossible to cover with a single series. With this residency at The Firehouse Space, Dan Blake brings together a range of collaborations that at least begins to represent the diversity of experiences and musical styles in music. Now in its third season, this opening concert will feature rare appearances by Terri Hron, Paula Matthusen, and Yoni Niv.

At 8pm, recorderist Terri Hron will be joined by Paula Matthusen for a set of electro-acoustic works. Montreal-based Hron has actively worked to reinvent her instrument through an expansive improvisational language that includes live processing, extended techniques, and ongoing collaborations with an international cast of adventurous composers. Composer Paula Matthusen is one such composer, whose work Alex Ross has described as “entrancing” , often considering discrepancies in musical space—real, imagined, and remembered. For this evening, she will join Terri on live electronics.

At 9pm, Israeli composer and electronicist Yoni Niv returns to NYC for a rare performance of his works. Described by the Organ Magazine as “full of textured atmosphere and quiet seductive impressive detail,” composer and sound artist Yoni Niv explores cross-cultural, urban musical practices across a wide variety of artistic mediums. He will be joined by long time collaborators, baritone saxophonist Josh Sinton and soprano saxophonist Dan Blake.
