MOPDtK @ 8:00
Charles Evans Quartet @ 9:30

Mostly Other People Do the Killing is a jazz quartet based in New York City including trumpeter Peter Evans, saxophonist Jon Irabagon, bassist Moppa Elliott, and drummer Kevin Shea. The group formed in 2003 and has released five albums to date on Elliott’s Hot Cup label including an eponymous debut, Shamokin!!!This Is Our MoosicForty Fort, and Slippery RockShamokin!!! andThis Is Our Moosic feature cover art that parodies classic albums by Art Blakey and Ornette Coleman. MOPDtK performs compositions by bandleader Moppa Elliott, all of which are arbitrarily named after towns in his native Pennsylvania. Performances often take the form of large suites in which the group transitions between original pieces and jazz standards, often employing theatrics and elements of rock, pop, and classical music.

The Charles Evans Quartet will perform a world premiere of On Beauty, Charles Evans’ 2nd chamber jazz composition for baritone and soprano saxes, bass, and piano.  In preparation for a new recording featuring soprano master David Liebman, (also on the group’s debut, “Subliminal Leaps,” 2013) tonight’s performance will include virtuoso Daniel Blake.

“12-tone melodies, free improvisation, pretty harmonies and noise are woven together into a seamless whole that is utterly unique and devoid of cliche.” –Peter Evans, More Is More Records
