Abstract painter Wassily Kandinsky famously saw colors and shapes when he listened to music and sought to capture this experience in his paintings. He once wrote, “Colour is the keyboard, the eyesh are the hammers, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand which plays, touching one key or another, to cause vibrations in the soul.” This project embraces this intersection between visual art and music that was so pivotal to Kandinsky, with seven new works by seven emerging young composers based on his Compositions IV-X.

Meraki Chamber Players is a newly formed chamber ensemble committed to finding creative ways to make “classical” music accessible to new audiences. We believe that the face and place of classical music is ever changing and evolving, but no less important than it ever was. Through our work with young and vibrant new composers, unique and flexible instrumentation, creative programming, and nonconventional performance spaces, we strive to bring creativity and vitality to our art and to connect with audiences new and old. Founding members Natasha Loomis (flute), Alexander Knox (clarinet), and Terrence Thornhill (cello) are all classically trained musicians who enjoy varied careers as performers and educators throughout the NY metropolitan area.
