The May 4th concert at The Firehouse Space celebrates and caps off the NYU residency of Fjóla Evans and Alex Weiser who have been students of Michael Gordon and Julia Wolfe for the past two years. The concert will include recent works commissioned by the grizzly up-and-coming ensemble, Bearthoven, comprised of inimitable mainstays of the New York new music scene: Matt Evans, Karl Larson, and Pat Swoboda. Charlotte Mundy, whose performances have been praised as “preternaturally focused” and “mesmerizing” by the New York Times, will join Karl Larson to perform Weiser’s recent pensive song cycle Marks. Prolific commissioners of new music Maya Bennardo and Hannah Levinson of violin and viola duo andPlay, will join the bill to premiere a piece recently written for them by Fjóla Evans. Fjóla will also premiere a work from her solo-cello and electronics project, FJÓLÆ, and both composers will present string quartets originally composed for the JACK quartet, performed on the occasion by a selection of outstanding freelance musicians.

Fjóla and Weiser share a thoughtful, introspective approach to composition with widely varying results. Fjóla’s work is informed by her cello performance practice and uses structures where timbral hierarchy dictates the musical development, while Weiser’s work is often dramatic and visceral with a vibrant rhythmic impulse and a strong, if often fraught, relationship to traditional approaches to harmony and lyricism.
