Code Inconnu is part IV of composer Bojan Vuletic‘s ongoing composition cycle “RecomposingArt” (2011– ), which takes inspiration from artworks in the fields of poetry, art, photography, theatre, dance, cinematography and literature through recomposition. Vuletic takes these works out of their context in a completely subjective manner, transporting them into a new, purely musical and independent form. Code Inconnu is the fourth part of this cycle, following Atemwende (nine poems by Paul Celan in 2011 for trumpet and string quartet), Unschaerfe (eight pictures by Gerhard Richter in 2012 for string quartet) and L’écume des jours (novel by Boris Vian in 2013 for harp, trumpet, tuba and string quartet).

The original film Code Unknown was directed by Austrian director and screenwriter Michael Haneke in 2000. Most of the story occurs in Paris, France, where the fates of several characters intersect and connect. Haneke is best known for films such as Caché, Funny Games and Amour, which won the Palme d’Or at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Award in the category of Best Foreign Language Film.

Code Inconnu is a fascinating mosaic of modern anxieties and prejudices, a crossing of different stories with hard breaks, a clash of aggression and moral courage and interferences of five languages and voicelessness. The central idea behind the re-composition of Code Inconnu is a variation of the original subtitle “Récit incomplet de divers voyages” into ”Musique incomplet de divers voyages / Several journeys of incomplete musique.” According to the different story threads the re-composition will try to invent different musical languages, sonic states and frictions between the instruments and musicians. Moments of escalation will be broken open by the means of improvisation. Therefore the music requires the musicians to move with great sensitivity and virtuosity within this new, very special musical world. The composition will follow the chronology of the original movie and is supposed to be a densely written piece of music with corresponding images and tonalities.
