A real life
Alice in Wonderland, pianist Mary Prescott, delves into a world of experimental art music – a hyper-sensory dimension of fantasy, curiosity, and unpredictability. Examining Lewis Carrol’s surreal Victorian novel through improvisation, Prescott tries and tests the concepts of time, identity, reality and rules, no
ting that traditions behave strangely in Wonderland. A classically trained adventurer who thrives in an unlikely playground, Prescott unbuttons a naive yet profound identity, eliciting cavernous, expressive sounds of harmonious discord. Prescott invites listeners to explore their own whims and curiosities from behind the curtains of this bravely evocative music.
Adventurous and explorative pianist Mary Prescott has performed as a soloist and chamber musician at venues internationally, including Carnegie Hall, Bargemusic, Steinway Hall, MacPhail Center for the Arts, and Abrons Art Center. Founder and Artistic Director of the Lyra Summer Music Workshop at Smith College, she has taught and collaborated with members of the Marlboro Music Festival, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, London Symphony Orchestra, and others. As an improviser, Prescott has performed at Minneapolis’ Jazz Central and Shapeshifter Lab in Brooklyn, and is a founding member of The Hook & Eye Project with visual artist Angela Costanzo. Prescott holds piano performance degrees from the University of Minnesota and Manhattan School of Music.
