‘Silence’ represents one of the pathbreaking works of the 20th century: John Cage’s famous ‘Lecture on Nothing’ adapted by JIP making the structural elements of the piece audible and visible in a playful way. In a Cagelike style, pieces by Kagel, Schnebel, Aperghis und Berio are presented before, during and after the Lecture, works that are also technically, formally and in sound terms important in the musical history of the 20th and 21st century. Cage’s piece itself is seldom heard live and in UMS ‘n JIP’s performance is presented in a particularly exciting version. The program was given its premiere in 2007 at the Schweizerischen Tonkünstlerfest (Swiss Sound Artists Festival) at the Theaterhaus Gessnerallee in Zurich. So far it has been performed 50 times in 10 countries and almost all continents.
